See Without Being Seen

Versatile mirror film for windows

Mirror film, also called chrome film, silver film or spy mirror film, protects against prying eyes. Large windows of easily visible offices or laboratories are often protected from unauthorised viewing with mirror film.

The Principle

Mirror films fundamentally prevent views through the window side with greater light incidence; the other side is transparent but tinted. Through the side with less light, you can look out unhindered.

Important to Note

The mirror effect and associated privacy are always dependent on lighting conditions and exist on one side only. When a room is lit in the evening, the mirror film no longer provides any privacy from outside.

Benefits of Mirror Film

Glare Protection

Reflection of sunlight enables relaxed work at the monitor.

Heat Reduction

Over 80% heat reduction possible. Noticeable temperature reduction in summer.

Privacy

One-way privacy in daylight – see without being seen.

UV Protection

Reflects and absorbs harmful UV rays. Protects furniture and materials.

How Do Mirrored Window Films Work?

Mirror films consist of multiple polyester layers with a metallic layer in the middle. The strong reflection, like mirrored sunglasses, allows you to see through while not being seen yourself.

Interior or Exterior Film?

The choice depends on your glass type:

Exterior Film Required

Recommended
  • Insulated or thermal glass
  • Gas-filled window panes
  • Laminated safety glass
  • Tinted panes
  • Sloped roof glazing

Prevents thermal stress that can lead to glass breakage.

Interior Film Possible

  • Single-glazed window panes
  • Furniture glazing

The advantage of exterior film: Heat radiation is blocked before the window glass, so less heat enters the interior.

Decorative & Functional

Indoors, mirror films are used when rooms need to be visually shielded or to decoratively enhance furniture glazing. Mirror film optimally combines function and decorative character.

Frequently asked questions about Versatile mirror film for windows

A mirror film is essentially the darkest version of a highly reflective silver sun protection film. The properties (mirror effect, UV and glare protection, heat reduction) are therefore identical.

Mirror films are available for both exterior and interior application. Before fitting, you need to determine the type of glass: for single-glazed windows, furniture glazing, or double glazing without gas filling or thermal coating, an interior film can be used. If the glass is insulated or thermal glazing, a gas-filled pane, laminated safety glass, tinted glass, or angled roof glazing, an exterior film must be used.

Mirror films offer the highest heat protection of all sun protection films. The exterior version provides the strongest heat reduction at up to 86%, whilst the interior version rejects up to 80% of heat radiation. Fitting a mirror film can noticeably improve the indoor climate, as it can achieve a temperature reduction of several degrees in interior spaces.

The privacy effect of mirror films is created by the so-called "one-way mirror effect": this prevents visibility from whichever side of the glass has the greater light intensity; the other side remains transparent, though tinted. You can see out clearly through the side with less light. This means that at night, with interior lights on, additional privacy measures are needed.

To maintain privacy during the evening and night hours, you can use additional pleated blinds, venetian blinds, or roller blinds.
